The second largest district in the State in terms of area, Belagavi lies on the northern boundary of Karnataka adjoining the State of Maharashtra and Goa. The National Highway 4 and the broad guage railway line between Bangalore and Mumbai cut through the district, providing excellent accessibility to the rest of the country. Belagavi is situated at an equal distance of 500 Kms from Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad and at about 150 Kms from the seaport of Goa. The nearest seaport is Karwar. Belagavi is on the National air map providing air connectivity to Mumbai, Pune. Bangalore. The central location and easy accessibility to the rest of the country and the world, coupled with the salubrious climate, modern lifestyle and excellent infrastructure make Belagavi an ideal location. Belagavi is known for its industrial activity, mainly in Hydraulics, Foundries and Auxiliary and Ancillary units. Over the years, Belagavi, a city very pleasant to live in, has grown into a center for education and Visvesvaraya Technological University has also been set up with its head-quarters in Belagavi. The Govt. of Karnataka has awarded independent University status to a PG center at Bhootaramanahatti. A 350 acres aerospace related SEZ has started operations just outside of Belagavi city.
